Frozen in a Flash – Jeannette Keukelaar
Frozen in a Flash by Jeannette Keukelaar. Set in New Zealand’s Northland, this is a work of fiction about a frozen prehistoric girl brought back to life in the 21st Century. The story draws on the author’s own life experiences as well as her practice as a trauma counsellor and Imago Relationship therapist to paint a vibrant and realistic picture of the struggles and triumphs of a young woman finding herself in a world completely alien to the one she was born to.

Synopsis of Frozen in a Flash
Imagine being caught in a catastrophic blizzard on the eve of your wedding and waking up to a world you no longer recognise. Kraana is a young woman from a prehistoric village who becomes ‘frozen in a flash’ during a storm. She remains trapped in a suspended state of not alive but perfectly preserved for centuries, until she is discovered in an ice cliff by a team of geologists. Nobody could have anticipated bringing her back to life, let alone how she could ever make sense of the world she finds herself in.
The reader is pulled into the lives of Kraana and her 21st Century foster family, exploring the issues of culture and legends, past and present.

Frozen in a Flash is Jeannette Keukelaar’s second novel. Her first book, Different Worlds, is a family drama with a metaphysical twist, set mainly in the 1950s in New Zealand.
A word from the author
“This is a fictitious story which I initially wrote as a short story when I was counselling emotionally traumatised clients. Some of these clients reminded me of petrified wood, with their emotions frozen deep inside. For many, their trauma began in childhood, and I often visualised a young girl frozen in a glacier.
Soon after beginning this book I enrolled in a Te Reo Māori class. To my dismay, my attempts in speaking a new language brought up my old childhood stutter, which I believed I had outgrown. It felt as if the Reo words were frozen inside.
In counselling we often talk about parallel development and there is the old adage that writers write about themselves. The irony of these truisms amuses me.”
